Tenista estadounidense. En 1923 ganó el primero de sus siete títulos de singles en el Campeonato de EE.UU. En los Juegos Olímpicos de 1924 logró la medalla de oro en singles y en dobles. Su juego era tan fuerte que de 1927 a 1932 ganó todo los sets de singles que jugó en EE.UU. Obtuvo ocho veces el título de Wimbledon (1927–30, 1932, 1933, 1935 y 1938), récord que sólo quebró Martina Navratilova en 1990.
